Even Thaci has now admitted that Serbia is not in any hurry to recognise an independent Kosovo. If Belgrade so wishes it will languish and rot.
The west has its own problems and give it time they will wash their hands of this troublesome region and there is nothing the Albos can do to change this.
On the question of why can’t Kosovo be an autonomous region of Serbia? I have a feeling that Serbs no longer even consider this to be an option since they have had more than enough of the Albanians. Unfortunately, Albanians have always been a problem in this region. Even under their great beneficiary Tito whenever there was a threat to the then Yugoslavia aka in the early 1950s the near border conflict with Italy over Trieste; the first place the military sent additional units was Kosovo.
Now the options that appear to be on the table is change borders, and if they do they will be in Serbia’s favour or status quo where no investment (not that it will get anyway) with extremely high unemployment and an aging population that dies out.

I know I have asked this question before but still don’t understand why Kosovo can’t just be an autonomous region within Serbia, where local Albanian minority can still run local institutions (police, health, roads) in local areas were they make up the majority, while Belgrade administers the boarders and state affairs.

I can’t accept the argument that its because of ‘the 1999 conflict’ and that Serbia can’t be trusted to administer Kosovo anymore, if that was the case then why is BiH still together? BiH conflict was even more brutal with higher causalities then the 99 KiM scuffle, yet citizens of BiH are still obligated to live together in one state.

European Borders were set in stone following the end of WW2 for good reason, the Kosovo precedent has already been used by Russia to justify their annexation of Crimea. Imagine a scenario were Hungry decides that Transylvania (in Romania) should join ‘natural Hungary’ or Turkey decides that all turks in Bulgaria & Greece should be part of ‘Historical Turkey’, or Italy decided that the east Adriatic coast line (including Vlore in Albania) belong to ‘natural risorgimento Italy’. And then there is Greece’s ‘Megali Idea’ which proposes all of Southern Albania belong to Greece. I’m sure all this talk about boarder modifications will end well for Europe.

Albanians don't have a take-it-all mentality, they are much more diplomatic. But when you push them or disrespect them, hell yeah there is confrontation. They have options and allies, they don't have to sit around and take it, and that's what Serbia has learned. But regardless, now that it's time to make a deal, they are entertaining the ideas for the most part. Painting Albanians like spoiled brats that want everything is misleading at best, especially after considering that they are the ones who have been wronged by wars, discrimination, etc. In reality they have every reason to not compromise, but they are cooperating with their allies in order for things to move forward. Serbia should thank Albanians, because without a deal with them there is no EU.
