those partners are not found in europe or russia or china but in africa mostly. then serbia could function as their gateway to europe.
(svabo, 7 February 2018 18:46)

Agreed, Serbia should really look into becoming an importer of African products and an exporter of those products to the EU. The desert sand of Chad is a highly valued commodity in Germany. The Egyptian camels could serve as easy to use water containers in France, and the Namibian click-tsk-roll-of-the-tongue music is the rage right now in South Switzerland.

Things are really going to get interesting this year.

If Vucic decides by himself he would go for the EU and leave Kosovo.
If there is a referendum then I believe it will be a no vote and then isolation from Europe.

Either way I see street protests in the future for Belgrade.
(Mark.W, 8 February 2018 05:28)

Isolation? Yeah keep on dreaming my little Ustasha. Vucic will not decide anything. That's why he is hinting at a referendum, but the EU will never let it get to a referendum. They will cave in well before - watch and learn.

Serbia is better off forging more trade with non-EU countries since the EU is saturated and is geared to help German industry.
The EU is geared to help a few core EU countries like Germany, and they ruin the sovereignty and local/national markets of smaller countries like Serbia.
Serbia will be forced to import GMO and will lose its free trade with Russia. It will have to march lockstep with EU sanctions.

svabo: "or they just could get their f*cking act together and make peace and get along with albanians and croats and bosniaks then serbia will be free and prosperous"

Actually Serbia currently has a trade SURPLUS with the neighboring countries - including Croatia, so it doesn't need to be in the EU for that at all.
Plus the EU market is saturated, so Serbia needs to look to other regions and countries.

I live in the UK, but if I were a bit younger I would try to move to China or Russia or somewhere else in the Far East. That is where the future of mankind will be determined. Forget the EU or US or Canada.

serbias gdp is about 100times smaller than that of germany. serbia should look for equal partners who are on the same level as serbia. those partners are not found in europe or russia or china but in africa mostly. then serbia could function as their gateway to europe. also turkey could play a role. but thats unlikely. or they just could get their f*cking act together and make peace and get along with albanians and croats and bosniaks then serbia will be free and prosperous but this is even more unlikely than they will ever join the EU.

Swallow what bitter pills? Serbia is winning! The longer this stays a frozen conflict, the better our results. Serbia doesn't have to enter the EU. Serbia doesn't have to recognize Kosovo. Serbia doesn't have to do anything. Spain and the other four countries won't let Kosovo enter and Serbia can just sit back and keep making smart reforms that it should be making regardless of the EU. What is so difficult to understand for these politicians in Belgrade!?!

Serbia has a chance to carve out a unique position for itself in Europe; it could become a link between the EU and the Russia-China axis. Serbian trade with Russia, China, the Arab states, Africa and South America will grow and will dwarf its trade with the EU. The EU will still be important, but nowhere near as important as it is today.

Serbia's prosperous future will not be found in the bankrupt and dysfunctional EU. It will be found in the East.

Michael,
I lived in China for awhile and traveled through Russia, life is very difficult for 90% of the people living in both of those countries. Canada is Heaven compared to Serbia, whereas Russia and China are much worse than even Serbia. Do not speak of that which you know nothing.

This is not the first decade of the new millennium anymore. Things have changed since the EU decided to ignore the WB to deal with other problems. They thought that the WB countries were willing to wait forever to join the EU. In the meanwhile new and old players emerged in the region. The sticks don't work anymore and the carrots may not be big enough. A more humble position of the EU might be more appropriate. In the meanwhile, WB countries should continue with reforms for their own sake but not at all costs.

Maybe in another planet but certainly not on this one.

Translation: Serbia will have to recognize the sovereignty of its neighbor.
