The US has been pressuring Serbia for a long time especially to recognise Kosovo, but that has not worked so now they are on a charm offensive, but it’s so obvious that it’s laughable and that will not work.
The US has already challenged Russia on all fronts; Georgia, Ukraine, Syria and all have failed. The US has lost Turkey – how in God’s name do you screw that one up?????????? How? My guess is pure incompetence.
The US itself cannot intervene in the Balkans so it wants NATO to do it, but NATO is ill-equipped to do that job. It’s a Catch 22, the vast number of NATO countries do not have the equipment or enough troops because the way NATO is structured they all must rely on the US, but the US does not have that equipment or manpower either.
If this was 1990, I would agree that they could certainly do something, but this is 2018. Russia is no longer a weakened state. The sanctions against Russia have no effect on its economy.

That is when Trump will most likely be gone and then the new administration will start to challenge Russia on all fronts, the Balkans included. If there is a Republican administration they will want to show Americans that they are going to tough on Russia, if the Democrats get in they will want to pay back Russia for their involvement during the past election.
Either way the pressure exerted by the US will be far more then just a comment about sitting on two chairs.
