There are no set rules for membership as we saw with Romania and Bulgaria and being close to Russia seems to work to our advantage. Look at K-Albanians, they love the EU, US and NATO and are getting nowhere. Not even on the white Schengen list. LOL!

Serbia has so called 'loyalty obligations' towards Russia which during the 1st world war was the only country that backed Serbia.
The EU offers Serbia far better conditions for advancement but demands that Serbia joins their policy of unity (towards Russia).
The EU will not abandon Serbia so easily because that would give Russia an open playing field, right in the heart of Europe.
Serbia's best option is to play it cool, keep both sides appeased and with that buy time.
In time the solution will present itself.

Greece's GDP per capita was about $6000 in 1980 (the year before it joined the EU) and it is about $18000 today. According to the math that is taught in most the world, 18000 is 3 times higher than 6000. But, I totally understand that in your math it is the opposite and hence everything looks upside down to you lol

Your going to lecture a Greek citizen on the economy? Triple the GDP means squat for the majority of the population when you don't have a job. Varoufakis had the right idea about declaring bankruptcy and going back to the Drachma, unfortunately Tsipras scapegoated his finance minister and made a deal with the EU selling off state owned companies at bargain basement prices.

I wonder if Greece has seen improvement of the living standards of its citizens since joining the EU?
