The Russian media have published the names of the Serbians who died in a fire in Siberia, but the authorities in Belgrade are waiting for official confirmation.

Six Serbian workers die in accident in Siberia

Odalovic added that three more Serbian workers who were injured but not in a critical condition, and that all had permits to work in the Russian Federation.

According to him, they were hired by Rosneft in Salekhard, a settlement on the Yamal peninsula in the Arctic, northwestern Siberia. TASS is reporting that the accident happened at an oil station of the Transneft company, quoting the press service of the Investigative Committee’s regional department.

The fire broke out in a wooden residential building located at a Transneft oil station on the Severo-Purovskoye oil field at about midnight local time (19:00 GMT) on February 7, killing six workers, Serbian citizens, the news agency said. Veljko Odalovic told RTS in Belgrade that the suspected cause of the fire was malfunctioning wiring, and added that the embassy in Moscow was working to coordinate with the Russian authorities when it comes to administrative and other work to be done in the wake of the tragedy, including the transport of those injured.

This government official stressed that the issue of Serbian workers leaving for Russia has become a serious problem in those cases when they do not have proper permits, as they often find themselves working for less money, or "cheated and left with nothing."

Odalovic added that the problem was not in the cooperation between the two countries, but was caused by "interest groups that are trying to make extra profit in that empty space (left over by) regular arrangements."

Odalovic said that "tens of workers" were forced to leave without any money. "We had to bring those people back, to transport them," he said, and noted that the Russian authorities ahead of the Sochi Olympics found a number of Serbian construction workers to be there without proper permits.
