Gov't pushes for changes in hooliganism law

The amendment envisages fines two times higher than the ones enforced presently and long prison terms for ringleaders of hooligan groups.

The government decided to take action only after the disqualification of Partizan FC from this year's UEFA competitions, which came in the wake of crowd trouble in Mostar.

The current law was adopted in 2003, but has so far not reduced either the amount or intensity of fan violence in Serbian stadiums and other sports venues.

According to the proposal, clubs will also face penalties, which will include suspension from competitions and fines of up to EUR 12,500.

Alcohol consumption will be banned in a one kilometer diameter around the venue, while those who violate this could face 60 days in prison.

Huge banners that potentially restrict the work of police monitoring crowds will also be banned.
