Another prison suicide
Nedeljković was arrested as one of the organisers of a 30-member group suspected of fraud and embezzlement from road tolls, which the public deemed the “Highway Mafia.”Former Justice Minister Vladan Batić told B92 that the prison has been in a state of anarchy for some time now. He said that one of the reasons for this is the fact that there are incompetent people in high administrative positions within the prison system.
“There is a completely selective attitude towards the inmates, which makes some of them absolutely privileged, and a large number of inmate are, because of the status of these prisoners, very irritated and unsatisfied by their statuses. There is always a sense of instability within the prison, and people who find themselves in this position, are using this chance and situation to express their protests and complaints.” Batić said.
Batić said that the calls for improving the conditions of living within the prisons are completely understandable and reasonable.
“An amount of progress was made in the Central Prison, but it is still not at a level that is good enough for the high European standards. Remember, I had a problem then: Batić is making a pool in the prison in Požarevac, Batić this, Batić that. Now the trouble is knocking at their doors and people are finally realizing how delicate the situation actually is now.” Batić said.
