Zakharova was speaking for TV Rossiya when she warned about "the dangerous tendency of the West to begin a new round of accusations against Russia for allegedly bombing a hospital (in Syria), while here literally the next day the coalition forces are either destroying a hospital or killing civilians."

Noting that the Serbian embassy staffers were held hostage "by Islamic State," she said it was "sad, as this information had been given to the FBI and the CIA, although now deny they knew they (hostages) were there."

"All this is happening against the background of the fact the West is gradually trying to pull that same Serbia - and Montenegro already very much so - into NATO. Montenegrins are told - you should go to NATO, we will protect you," Zakharova told host Vladimir Solovyov.

She noted that "they are now trying to explain the same thing to Serbians," and added:

"How you can protect a country when you have the information that people are held hostage in a particular territory, and you bomb them. What security, what are you talking about? This is a special kind of humiliation, the imposition of the Stockholm syndrome when your make your victims - and they were the victims - love you and admit publicly that they want to be with you. This is a special kind of perversion."
