VIENNA The turnover of international criminal groups reaches USD 870bn on the annual level - six times the amount of the official development aid set aside by the UN. This was announced in Vienna by the world organization's Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC). UN: Criminals worldwide "earning" USD 870bn every year The figure also represents 1.5 percent of global GDP, and seven percent of global exports. UNODC chief Yuri Fedotov told Reuters that halting this transnational threat was one of the greatest challenges for the international community. Beside collecting large amounts of illegal money, organized crime also produces millions of victims each year, while human trafficking alone reached the figure of 2.4 million. The report estimates the value of drug trafficking at USD 320bn, followed by counterfeiting and human trafficking that bring in 250 and 32 billion a year respectively. Fedotov also stated that he hoped the media would - within the campaign carried out by his office - report about the damage that crime was dealing to societies and individuals. Earlier this year, the UNODC chief said that corruption alone was stripping developing nations of funds worth some USD 40bn every year. Tanjug
