"Just as we are awaiting the most joyous day tomorrow (Thursday), Serbia rightly expects this to be one of the last years in which Serbia is ridden with crisis, anxiety, insecurity and disbelief and to finally start to live better than before," Nikolic said after bringing in the badnjak - an oak branch or log.

Nikolic also wished that the message of peace among peoples reached every heart, not only in Serbia, but also across the world.

The president on Christmas Day attended liturgy served in the Cathedral Church of St. Michael the Archangel in Belgrade by Serbian Patriarch Irinej.

Serbian Orthodox Christians celebrate Christmas according to the Julian calendar, on January 7.
