The Office of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees says that it is content with Serbia’s asylum law, adopted Saturday. The UNHCR stated that, with the adoption of the law, Serbia had met commitments undertaken when signing the Refugee Status Convention of 1951 - one of the conditions for EU integration. UNHCR shows support for asylum law According to the statement, the UNHCR was content that the asylum law complied with all key standards for human rights protection and international protection defined in the Convention relating to the Status of Refugees and international obligations in the field of human rights. “The asylum law is the first concrete step in the process of building a national asylum system, and it offers a defined status for refugees that must now be implemented with several practical activities. It also sets out the rights which are afforded to individuals who meet the legally defined conditions,” reads the statement. The UNHCR hoped that the government would take immediate steps to pass the acts needed to finalize the functionality of national asylum institutions, and stated that it was ready to assist in all aspects of implementing a successful system for refugee protection.
