The Slovenian high court has decided that the state should pay the SCT company its expenses for the exhumation of a World War II mass grave. The government has been ordered to pay the construction company EUR 1.2mn in expenses for digging, forensic examinations, reburial and the construction of a memorial to the 1,179 victims of the mass execution that took place close to Maribor after the end of the war, reports Slovenian POP TV. State to refund exhumation costs SCT employees chanced upon the mass grave ten years ago, during construction of a section of highway near Maribor. However, no-one from the then Slovenian authorities wanted to reimburse the company’s costs, which undertook on itself responsibility for exhuming and burying the victims’ remains, costing the company some EUR 640,000. Despite SCT’s compensation claim for a job that otherwise falls within the state’s remit, no money was ever paid out, nor did anyone from the authorities respond to the company’s request. This led to SCT taking the matter to court, while, in the meantime, the figure in question rose to EUR 1.2mn.
