"I am publicly pleading with Mr. Jovanovic, who publicly 'supported' me in this way, not to vote for me. Thank you," wrote Jankovic.

He also noted that his "public message" was sent "to Jovanovic, not to the LDP."

Earlier, Jovanovic told N1 he would vote for Jankovic in Serbia's presidential election, scheduled for April 2 - although he thinks that what Jankovic is putting forward in his candidature is "far from what Serbia needs."

The LDP leader also said that members and supporters of his party told him they want to vote for Jankovic. "I'll support that. But I won't lecture anyone, or tell them how to vote," he said.

Asked whether this means he would back Jankovic, Jovanovic said he would present the issue to the party's presidency, and that he "believes this will be the party's position."
