Japan, Canada recognize Kosovo

Tokyo has recognized Kosovo's unilaterally declared independence today, reports the Japanese Foreign Ministry. “Japan hopes that Kosovo independence will contribute to long-term stability in the region,“ says the ministry in a statement. Japan, Canada recognize Kosovo It adds that Japan wishes to foster friendly relations with Serbia. Altogether 29 countries have thus far recognized Kosovo, including Japan, the U.S. and most of the members of the EU. Canada has also today decided to recognize the Kosovo Albanians' secession, saying it is a unique case that will have no influence on its own secessionist movements. Serbia has sent diplomatic protest notes and is expected to withdraw ambassadors from both countries shortly.
