The junior partner in the ruling coalition, G17 Plus, will support Boris Tadic to remain president, it emerged Sunday. Beta reported from Nis that Tadic said he is convinced that he will receive the support of the citizens and win in the upcoming presidential elections. G17 Plus backs Tadic for president "I also expect the support of the political parties, but if I don't get it, I'll have to make do without it. This isn't the first time in my life I'm involved with elections. And the last time I was, I won," Tadic told journalists and assessed that in the politics of Serbia "there is a lot of ill-will, bitter words and accusations." G17 Plus party vice president Tomica Milosavljevic said that his party supports Tadic in the elections. Radical Party candidate Tomislav Nikolic said he expects to win the election and stated that the campaign will begin on December 24. The Christian-Democratic Party of Serbia announced it will support Liberal Democratic Party candidate Cedomir Jovanovic in the presidential elections. Jovanovic stated at a Christian-Democratic Party's steering committee meeting that the most important thing for Serbia is to return to the road to Europe and that the only way to realize its European goals is to replace the government of Prime Minister Vojislav Kostunica. "We see these elections as a step bringing us closer to realizing that idea," Jovanovic said at the committee meeting and added that support for Serbia's clear determination to join Europe comes at a time when the idea that Serbia should be a "Russian province" is being affirmed. Socialist Party of Serbia spokesman Djordje Milicevic said on Dec. 16 that his party is prepared for the presidential elections in Serbia and that its candidate would be Milutin Mrkonjic.
