UN SC on Kosovo behind closed doors

In his report, Ban warned that a postponement of the decision on the Kosovo status would jeopardize the progress achieved since 1999.

He added that Martti Ahtisaari's proposal, envisaging supervised independence, "contains true elements for a sustainable solution."

Ruecker backed a quick resolution of the Kosovo status. His position is shared by the U.S. and the EU, who have presented four draft resolutions on Kosovo— the last two suggesting the continuation of the talks for another four months.

Russia has rejected all the draft resolutions, because the final proposal is supervised independence, which Serbia opposes.

Ban opposes unilateral Kosovo decisions

Ban Ki-moon called on Kosovo Monday not to take any unilateral steps of declaring independence.

The United Nations secretary-general called for patience, and asked Kosovo officials to wait for the UN to finish formulating its draft resolution for the future status of Kosovo.

"While the process lasts, I urge the citizens and leaders of Kosovo not to take any unilateral action, which would be extremely negative and very detrimental to the talks in progress," Ban told journalists after meeting with Portuguese Foreign Minister Luis Amado.

He commended the cooperation of the European Union and its efforts to find a solution for the Kosovo status crisis as soon as possible, adding that postponement in the adoption of the Kosovo resolution would be damaging.

Ban had said earlier that he was very distressed by the lack of progress being made in the process.

However, the secretary general said that he did not have an answer for how to get out of the current stalemate the UN Security Council finds itself in.
