Serbian agriculture exports increased by 43.3 percent in the first seven months of 2007, official data has shown. The export figure now stands at USD 904mn, while the trade surplus that the country's agriculture achieved is now USD 309.4mn. Agriculture posts USD 309.4mn trade surplus On the other hand, overall Serbian trade has recorded a heavy deficit of EUR 3.6bn. The Serbian Chamber of Commerce (PKS) said in a statement Monday import in the sector increased 19.9 percent, to total USD 594.6mn. Exports covered imports with 152 percent in the January – end of July period. Serbian agriculture participated with 18.8 percent in the country's overall exports, while its imports share was only 6.2 percent. Refined beet sugar remains the most profitable agricultural produce, with 98,980 tons exported, earning USD 79.4mn. At the same time, cigarettes continue to be the most imported item, worth USD 21.7mn in the first seven months of 2007. Agriculture posted good results primarily thanks to Serbia's preferential status in the EU market, liberalization of trade with the Western Balkans countries via CEFTA, and high export prices, especially those of corn and wheat.
