Serbian government passes bill on energy

The Serbian government passed Thursday a new bill on energy and decided to forward it urgently to the parliament for adoption. This was confirmed by head of the government's media relations office Milivoje Mihajlovic. The draft law on energy envisages that Serbia's Energy Agency should regulate the prices of electricity and gas in Serbia starting from next year. The new law will liberalize electricity market, as big buyers will from 2013 be able to buy electricity from suppliers they choose due to the opening of the electricity market, and the same will be valid for households from the beginning of 2015. The bill envisages that the transmission and distribution of electricity remain under state control and competition will not be introduced in that area, but only in the areas of production and supply. The main goals of the document are promoting security of energy supply, increasing market competition, increasing consumers protection, promoting energy efficiency and improving conditions for investment in the energy sector.
