The construction of a modern oil refinery in Smederevo is very important for Serbia, stated Minister of Environment and Spatial Planning Oliver Dulic. He also pointed out that the city made a wise decision to continue the procedure of issuing permits for the project, that should be built by the U.S.-Dutch consortium Comico Oil. Smederevo refinery important for Serbia "I see the weak turnout of citizens at the recent referendum (on Aug. 8) as a major defeat of the opposition, which tried to build their own local policy on a topic they absolutely do not understand, and that's environment protection," Dulic said in a statement for Tanjug. "This is not the case only with Smederevo - in almost every other city in which a factory is built, there is always some political party which shows excessive care for the environment," the minister pointed out adding that industrial waste is a much bigger threat to environment than factories. According to the Serbian law and all other relevant regulations, no one can build a factory unless it is in keeping with modern standards, he added. "Citizens of Smederevo need not worry, because the factory to be constructed will have the same impact on environment as any other refinery in Europe," the minister stressed.
