Another country dragged into the war – attack carried out

Iran said it had carried out new attacks on U.S. targets in the Middle East, including its first direct strike in Syria, following the sixth consecutive night of U.S. attacks on Iranian military facilities.

The ceasefire reached last month has turned into daily attacks and counterattacks, almost completely halting shipping traffic through the strategically important Strait of Hormuz and renewing investor concerns about the impact of the war that the United States and Israel began in February on the global economy.

The U.S. military said it had completed another night of strikes on Iran "to further weaken Iran’s military capabilities," including targets on Qeshm Island and near Bandar Abbas, home to Iran’s largest port, as well as key naval facilities and Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps sites.

"U.S. forces, including fighter aircraft, drones and warships, launched precision munitions that struck dozens of Iranian military targets, including coastal surveillance and air defense positions, military logistics infrastructure and naval capabilities," U.S. Central Command said.

Iran says it attacked Syria for the first time

One civilian was killed in a U.S. strike on the Pasabandar area near the southeastern port city of Chabahar, Iran’s semi-official Tasnim news agency reported. Iran launched missiles and drones at U.S. military bases in neighboring countries, including an air base in Jordan.

Iran’s military said it had also attacked U.S. facilities in Bahrain and Kuwait. According to witnesses, several sounds resembling explosions were heard in the Qatari capital, Doha, while the Interior Ministry said a child was injured by shrapnel.

Iranian state media reported that the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps had targeted the U.S. special operations command center at Al-Tanf in Syria, in retaliation for the killing of Iranian soldiers in Iranshahr. Reuters was not immediately able to verify these reports.

This marked Iran’s first direct attack on Syria, which had sought to avoid being drawn into the conflict spreading across neighboring countries. In Lebanon, Iran-backed Hezbollah fighters have fought against Israeli forces, while in Iraq, Iran-backed armed groups have carried out drone and missile attacks.

The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps said it had also targeted and destroyed a naval radar system on the Salameh islets and a U.S. air traffic control radar in the Ganem area of Oman, Iranian state media reported.

Traffic through the Strait of Hormuz almost completely halted

The latest escalation in the conflict has again brought shipping traffic through the Strait of Hormuz to an almost complete standstill. The waterway is the world’s most important maritime route for oil and gas shipments, and the disruption has pushed oil prices higher while reigniting concerns over the impact on inflation. Tehran has renewed its blockade of the strait, while Washington again blocked Iranian ports from Wednesday.

Sources told Reuters that Iran has indicated it could pressure its allies, the Houthis in Yemen, to close another key maritime passage — the Bab el-Mandeb strait at the entrance to the Red Sea — if Washington continues attacking Iranian infrastructure.

Iran attacked ships traveling through the Strait of Hormuz last week. White House spokesperson Karoline Leavitt said on Thursday that U.S. President Donald Trump would not "sit idly by and allow such acts of terror to continue in the strait without Iran being held accountable," Reuters reported. However, she added that the president "remains open to diplomacy."

Iranian sources said Tehran’s goal is to establish control over the strait, but that it is not inclined toward further escalation that could jeopardize the memorandum of understanding reached in June, which Iran still believes provides most of what it sought.
