Alert in Lithuania: Russians are attacking; The president and prime minister fled to a shelter PHOTO/VIDEO
NATO air policing fighter jets were scrambled after a “radar signature” with characteristics typical of unmanned aerial vehicles was detected today near the Lithuanian border, the Lithuanian military said.
The National Crisis Management Centre reported that an air alert has been declared for the population in several districts, including Vilnius, according to the Lithuanian portal Delfi.
“Air alert! Immediately go to a shelter or a safe place,” the emergency notice stated.
President Gitanas Nausėda and the presidential office were evacuated to shelters, confirmed spokesperson Frederikas Jansonas. The same protocol was applied in the Lithuanian parliament, where lawmakers and staff were moved to the basement of the building. Prime Minister Inga Ruginienė was also taken to a shelter.
Authorities in the Ignalina District urged students and teachers in the region to take shelter, while employees of public institutions were instructed to move to safe locations and await further instructions.
A yellow alert level was issued, meaning an attack is likely, but not yet underway.
In addition, from 10 a.m. local time, airspace over Vilnius Airport and its surroundings will be closed until further notice.
The Lithuanian military also advises people to immediately head to a shelter or a safe location, reports Delfi.
