According to available data, the “Jıldırımhan” (Lightning) has a range of approximately 6,000 kilometers and can strike targets in Europe, Africa, and Asia, although production of the missile has not yet begun.

In a recent interview with Al Jazeera, experts noted that missiles with a range greater than 5,500 kilometers are classified as intercontinental.

The missile reportedly reaches speeds of up to Mach 25, has four propulsion engines, and uses liquid fuel based on nitrogen tetroxide, while its warhead can carry a payload of up to 3,000 kilograms.

Turkish Defense Minister Yaşar Güler stated that Turkey aims to offer its allies not only weapons systems but also technological solutions and a sustainable security framework.

Experts assess that the presentation of the prototype is significant primarily for the development of domestic technological capabilities, rather than for the missile’s immediate operational use.

Analysts point out that the project is also linked to Turkey’s civilian space programs, noting that ballistic missile technology and space launch systems partially overlap.

Representatives of the Turkish defense industry assess that the new project represents a step forward in strengthening military technology and deterrence, as well as Turkey’s ambition to enhance its global influence.

The presentation of the missile comes at a time of heightened tensions in the Middle East, including conflicts involving Iran, the situation in Gaza and Lebanon, as well as strained relations among several regional actors, Al Jazeera reports.

Analysts say that in recent years Turkey has been developing a strategy to reduce dependence on foreign suppliers and strengthen its domestic defense industry, which has grown significantly since the 2010s.

Turkey is today one of the more important NATO members, with the second-largest standing army in the Alliance and a rapidly growing arms export sector, which surpassed 10 billion dollars in 2025.
