According to the portal pronews.gr, Gerasimov visited the command of Russia’s ‘Southern’ group, where he stated that Russian forces have occupied more than 1,700 square kilometers and 80 settlements in Ukraine, including the entire Luhansk region, since the beginning of 2026.

He also added that in March and April 2026 alone, Russian forces captured around 700 square kilometers and 34 settlements.

The Russian general emphasized that Russian forces have occupied 70 percent of Lyman in the Donetsk region and 75 percent of Novopavlivka in the Dnipropetrovsk region.

He also stated that half of Kostiantynivka has been occupied, while Russian forces have entered the outskirts of Zaporizhzhia and breached its urban perimeter.

However, as the Greek portal notes, Gerasimov’s claims have not been independently verified, while some analysts believe that the Russian Chief of the General Staff may have been referring to an ongoing infiltration by Russian special forces operating in Zaporizhzhia, aiming to erode the Ukrainian defense system from within.

According to Ukrainian channels, the Armed Forces of Ukraine urgently need an additional 200,000 soldiers in order to stop the Russian advance toward Dobropillia, Sloviansk, and Kramatorsk.
