Iranian supertanker breaks through U.S. blockade
An Iranian VLCC-class supertanker, which has been sanctioned by the United States Department of Treasury, capable of carrying up to 2 million barrels of crude oil, reportedly sailed through open waters and the Strait of Hormuz before entering Iranian territory
The vessel continued operating with its tracking systems active and reportedly arrived at its destination without disruption, despite earlier U.S. announcements of a maritime blockade of traffic to and from Iranian ports, according to shipping data cited by Iranian media.
Washington stated it would prevent vessels from reaching the Iranian coast or docking at its ports.
More than 20 commercial ships passed through the Strait of Hormuz in the past 24 hours, despite claims by the U.S. military that no ships had successfully passed through the blockade of Iranian ports, the Wall Street Journal reported, citing U.S. officials.
According to the New York-based newspaper, commercial shipping continued to transit one of the world’s most important maritime routes.
Fars: A second ship has also passed the blockade
According to Iran’s state news agency Fars News Agency, a second Iranian vessel has reportedly passed through the Strait of Hormuz and is heading toward the port of Imam Khomeini Port despite the U.S. blockade.
Ship tracking data allegedly shows a cargo vessel carrying food entering the Persian Gulf.
The reports have not been independently verified.
It appears that the United States is enforcing a blockade around Iranian ports rather than the Strait itself, and it remains unclear where exactly the blockade begins and ends.
