Conflicts in the Middle East are escalating. After Israeli airstrikes on Iran's largest gas field, Trump is opposed to continuing attacks on Iranian energy infrastructure. Tehran is threatening retaliation.
Attack on the Iranian port city of Bandar Anzali
Israeli strikes on the Iranian port city of Bandar Anzali and in the Caspian Sea last night destroyed several Iranian naval ships as well as maritime infrastructure, the military reported, releasing footage of the attacks.
According to the Iranian military, the attacks destroyed an Iranian Navy corvette, four missile boats, and several auxiliary and patrol vessels, along with a command center and a shipyard.
Some of the ships were in the port, while others were at sea.
Zakharova: "This is not accidental"
Maria Zakharova, spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation, stated that Moscow expects a response from international organizations after RT correspondent Steve Swini and his cameraman were injured in an Israeli attack in southern Lebanon.
"Considering the killing of two hundred journalists in Gaza, today's events cannot be called accidental," Zakharova wrote on Telegram and shared a video of the strike.
She added that this is especially so because the missile did not hit a "significant strategic military target," but a location where a report was being filmed.
"We wish a speedy recovery to the RT journalists. We are awaiting a response from international organizations," Zakharova said.
RT correspondent Ali Rida reported that Israel "deliberately targeted journalists" on a bridge, despite them wearing vests marked "Press."
Bessent: The U.S. could lift sanctions on Iranian oil to ease rising prices
U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent stated that the United States may remove sanctions on Iranian oil, which is currently on tankers, in order to enter the market and ease the rise in crude oil prices.
He noted that there are about 130 million barrels of Iranian oil at sea that could be used to stabilize the market.
"Essentially, we will use Iranian barrels against Iran to keep the price lower over the next 10 to 14 days while we continue the campaign. We have many instruments and much more we can do," Bessent said.
He added that the U.S. administration has so far allowed Iranian oil to continue leaving the Persian Gulf despite tensions in the region.
Announcements about the possibility of lifting sanctions on Iranian oil came after Brent crude exceeded $119 per barrel.
