Under the watchful eye of the Navy: Russian ships tracked through the English Channel PHOTO

The British Royal Navy announced today that, during a two-day operation coordinated with NATO allies, it tracked Russian ships sailing through the English Channel as part of increased monitoring of Russian maritime traffic.

According to the Navy, two British patrol vessels, supported by Wildcat helicopters, intercepted the Russian warship Boykiy and the accompanying oil tanker MT General Skobelev as they headed north, after which monitoring was handed over to NATO allied forces, Reuters reported.

This operation came a day after the United Kingdom announced that it had supported a French operation to board a Russian-sanctioned tanker while it was passing through the Strait of Gibraltar, in an effort to limit sources of funding for Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

The British Navy stated that it regularly conducts such missions to monitor potential threats to national security, including the protection of critical infrastructure such as undersea cables and gas pipelines.
