NATO leaders in a secret group chat: Every move of Donald Trump is being analyzed
Every move by U.S. President Donald Trump is facing closer scrutiny than ever. NATO and other European leaders have created a group chat called the "Washington Group" to analyze his "potentially harmful" actions.
Keir Starmer, Emmanuel Macron, Friedrich Merz, Alexander Stubb, Giorgia Meloni, and even Volodymyr Zelensky are part of the group chat, which also includes European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.
“When things start moving quickly, it’s hard to coordinate, and this group (chat) is really effective. It tells you a lot about personal relationships and how important they are,” a source familiar with the group told Politico.
Most messages focus on responding to his political actions rather than his often-provocative statements, the source said.
During last night’s press conference, Trump was asked about his relationship with Macron and Starmer.
“I think I get along well with them. They always treat me nicely. They get a little rough when I’m not around, but when I am, they treat me very well. I like them both; both are liberal. They need to fix their countries. London has a lot of problems, Paris has a lot of problems,” Trump told reporters.
By “problems,” he was referring to immigration and energy, commenting on what he called “windmills” and expressing support for the use of North Sea oil and gas.
Trump’s recent actions in Greenland have undoubtedly worried members of the group, many of whom are in Davos this week for the World Economic Forum.
The U.S. president continued to pressure European allies over his demand to take control of Greenland, while markets fell in response to his tariff threats.
He also launched an attack on the UK’s decision to cede sovereignty over the Chagos Islands, revealed messages from European leaders, and posted images portraying Greenland as U.S. territory.
