According to Ukrainska Pravda, citing the Hungarian news agency Telex.hu, Szalay-Bobrovniczky noted that “as long as the open war continues in the neighborhood, the likelihood of intentional or accidental escalation is high, which also puts the Hungarian people at risk.”

The Hungarian Defense Minister said that peace can only be achieved through diplomatic means. He claimed that U.S. efforts to establish peace are being undermined by European Union leaders, who are attempting to sabotage them and will do everything to ensure the continuation of the war.

“Hungary continues to stand on the side of peace,” he added.

Referring to his own data, the minister further stated that around 1,000 fighters are removed from combat daily, a quarter of whom are killed. He also mentioned that some supply routes are impassable and that the “collapse of Ukrainian agriculture,” which his government has previously strongly criticized, also negatively affects Hungarians.

Szalay-Bobrovniczky also claimed that Ukrainian forces are manned at 40 percent of capacity, while Russian armed forces are at 70 percent, concluding that “Ukraine has, from a military standpoint, lost this war.”

Orban’s meeting with Putin

During a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow on November 28, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban called for a swift end to the war in Ukraine. At the same time, he indicated hopes for favorable and stable oil and gas supplies.

Orban also emphasized that granting Ukraine the status of a buffer zone would ensure peace in the postwar period.
