WSJ: If Europe hadn't intervened…
Russia and the U.S. would have long ago reached a peace settlement for Ukraine if Europe had not intervened in the process, writes the Wall Street Journal, citing an anonymous French official.
The French official stated that, if it weren’t for the Europeans, Russian President Vladimir Putin and U.S. President Donald Trump would have long ago reached an agreement on Ukraine, the article notes.
According to him, Europe was left on its own because the Americans are keeping their distance from the region, which means it will have to rely more on its own capabilities.
The newspaper also notes that, after Bloomberg published a transcript of the conversation between Russian President’s aide Yuri Ushakov and U.S. special envoy Steve Witkoff, many people got the impression that the Trump administration was more interested in improving relations and strengthening economic cooperation with Russia than in defending NATO.
Bloomberg previously released transcripts of phone calls between Ushakov and U.S. presidential envoy Steven Witkoff, as well as Kirill Dmitriev, director of the Russian Direct Investment Fund and special representative of the Russian president for investment and economic cooperation with foreign countries.
Dmitriev dismissed the agency’s publication as false.
Bloomberg claims to have reviewed a recording of the conversation on October 29, during which ways of cooperating with the U.S. on a plan to resolve the Ukrainian conflict were allegedly discussed.
