It is also noted that new soldiers are not dying in combat, but from poisoning caused by alcohol substitutes.

According to the partisans, the Russian military command deliberately avoids addressing the issue of mass drunkenness, because “drunk soldiers are a convenient resource — they don’t ask questions and go into assaults ‘under the influence.’”

However, this is leading to serious conflicts with sober soldiers.

Reports state that intoxicated soldiers regularly give away their comrades’ positions: they make noise at the front lines, use flashlights, fall asleep on duty, forget their weapons, and even open fire on their own.
