Donald Trump issued an order: Operation is being launched
The United States Secretary of Defense, Pete Hegseth, announced the launch of Operation "Southern Spear," stating that it will target "drug terrorists" and protect the U.S. from drugs that are killing people.
"U.S. President Donald Trump has ordered the action, and the Department of Defense is carrying it out. Today, I am announcing Operation 'Southern Spear,'" Pete Hegseth wrote in a post on the social media platform X.
According to Axios, it is not entirely clear whether Hegseth was referring to ongoing U.S. operations near Venezuela and the surrounding region, or if this is a new, expanded mission.
CBS News reports that these are new attacks on ships transporting drugs and notes that amid rising tensions between the U.S. and Venezuela, senior U.S. military officials have presented President Trump with options for potential operations in the South American country.
