A New Cold War is inevitable: The West and Russia enter a showdown that will change the world
Former Russian oil tycoon and Kremlin critic Mikhail Khodorkovsky warned in an interview with Brussels-based Politico that a “second Cold War” between Russia and the West is inevitable and will last for at least ten years.
“We should expect that some form of Cold War will last for at least ten years,” Khodorkovsky said in Brussels.
According to him, Western sanctions have only a limited effect, and Ukrainian drone attacks on Russian refineries cannot seriously weaken “Moscow’s war machine.”
He added that the possibility of Putin losing power existed only during the first two years of the war in Ukraine, but that moment has now passed.
Khodorkovsky, who lives in exile in London, was recently charged again in Russia with “terrorism and an attempt to seize power by force.”
Although he believes that one day he will return to Russia, Khodorkovsky said that it will take decades for the country to rid itself of the “imperialist narrative” that, as he claims, justifies “aggressive policies toward its neighbors.”
“My generation will not live to see the day when Russian society returns to a state of normality,” he said.
