Italy moves closer to recognizing the Palestinian state
Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani stated that Italy’s recognition of the State of Palestine is closer following the release of the remaining Israeli hostages by the Palestinian militant group Hamas.
The release of hostages was one of the conditions set by Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s government for recognizing Palestine, while the other condition was the political and military exclusion of Hamas from power in Gaza and the West Bank, reports ANSA.
“Today, the conditions are finally met for Gaza to be freed from Hamas’ nightmare and temporarily placed under international control with active participation of Islamic countries,” Tajani said in an address to the Italian lower house of parliament.
He noted that “recognition of the State of Palestine, once the conditions set by parliament are met, is now closer.”
“All of this aims at achieving a truly democratic, peaceful, and non-sectarian Palestinian state, entrusted to a deeply renewed Palestinian National Authority in its personnel and methods—a peaceful state recognized by Israel and recognizing Israel,” Tajani added.
