Guterres: The Security Council must change
UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres stated that the structure of the Security Council reflects the reality of 1945 and called for its reform.
"First of all, I think that the reform of the Security Council really makes sense. The Security Council is a structure that does not correspond to the modern world. It corresponds to the world of 1945," he told reporters at a press conference.
According to Guterres, this creates "not only a problem of legitimacy, but also a problem of effectiveness" of the Security Council.
The Security Council of the United Nations is, by the way, the most important body of the United Nations, responsible for maintaining peace and security in the world.
While other organs of the United Nations only make recommendations to the members of the UN, the Security Council has the authority to make decisions that the members must respect, as stated in the Charter of the United Nations.
Council decisions are called resolutions.
The presidency of the Security Council rotates and lasts for one month.
Representatives of Security Council members must always be present at the UN headquarters in New York so that meetings can be held at any time.
There are two categories of membership in the OUN Security Council. These are permanent members and elected members.
Permanent members of the SC:
- China
- France
- Russia
- United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland
- United States of America
