The UN General Assembly votes on the "New York Declaration"

The formally named "New York Declaration on the Peaceful Settlement of the Palestinian Question and the Implementation of the Two-State Solution" states that "Hamas must release all hostages and that the UN General Assembly condemns the "attacks committed by Hamas on civilians on October 7," reports France 24.

It also calls for "collective action to end the war in Gaza, to achieve a just, peaceful and lasting solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict based on the effective implementation of the two-state solution."

The declaration, already supported by the Arab League and signed by 17 UN member states in July, also aims to completely remove Hamas from its leadership position in the Gaza Strip.

"In the context of ending the war in Gaza, Hamas must end its rule in Gaza and hand over weapons to the Palestinian Authority, with international engagement and support, in accordance with the goal of a sovereign and independent Palestinian state," the declaration states.

Today's vote precedes the upcoming UN summit, which will be co-chaired by Riyadh and Paris on September 22 in New York, and at which French President Emmanuel Macron should, as he promised, formally recognize the Palestinian state.

Great Britain, Canada, Australia and Belgium have also announced that they will recognize a Palestinian state, and Germany has announced that it will support a United Nations resolution that confirms Palestinian statehood under international law, but that this does not constitute formal recognition.
