Russian tactics mowed down Kyiv at night VIDEO
The "Iskander-K" cruise missiles used by Russia to attack Kyiv on July 31 were launched from ultra-low altitudes, which made their detection and interception difficult. Ukrainian air defense managed to destroy only three out of eight of these missiles.
"All missiles are dangerous. Some are intercepted more effectively, others less so. As for the missiles that attacked the Kyiv region today - they are ground-launched cruise missiles, Iskander-K. They are also among the most frequently used missiles by Russia, along with the H-101 and Kalibr," said Colonel Yurii Ihnat, head of communications of the Air Force Command of the Ukrainian Army.
Ihnat said that although these missiles belong to the same class, they present specific challenges to intercept.
The Air Force reports that H-101 cruise missiles have the best interception rate: over 2,500 have been launched and about 2,000 have been destroyed by air defenses. Kalibar missiles are in second place, with more than half of the intercepted. Unfortunately, the Iskander-K proved to be the most demanding, as less than half of these missiles were shot down.
Ihnat noted that the Iskander-K is as dangerous as the Iskander-M ballistic missile due to its short flight time.
This time, the Russians launched cruise missiles from Russia's Kursk region, which is relatively close to Kyiv.
"This means there is very little time to detect and react. Another tactic used by the Russians is ultra-low altitude, following riverbeds and terrain features, forcing the missile close to the ground, making it difficult for our air defenses to detect. The enemy has used this method before, and today only three out of eight missiles were successfully intercepted."
Let's recall that in the night between July 30 and 31, Russia attacked Ukraine with 317 drones and missiles, most of which were aimed at Kyiv. Air defense shot down 291 air units, but successful hits and fallen debris led to casualties.
Eight people, including a child, were killed and 124 injured in a combined Russian attack on Kyiv.
