Terrible shooting in Washington: members of the Israeli embassy were killed; FBI issued an urgent announcement
Two staff members of the Israeli Embassy in Washington were killed outside the Jewish Museum in Washington, US Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem said.
The victims, a man and a woman, were shot while leaving an event at the Metropolitan Jewish Museum, sources told CBS.
Police have named the suspect as Elias Rodriguez of Chicago. He was arrested, local authorities said.
The spokeswoman of the Israeli embassy, Tal Naim Cohen, announced on the X social network.
"Two employees of the Israeli Embassy were shot tonight at close range while attending a Jewish event at the Metropolitan Jewish Museum in Washington," she wrote.
"We have full confidence in law enforcement, both local and federal, in their ability to apprehend the shooter and protect Israeli representatives and Jewish communities across the United States."
Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) Director Kash Patel said the FBI is working with police to respond to the situation, adding that authorities will inform the public "as much as possible."
"Please pray for the victims and their families," he said.
Herzog: Terror and hatred will not break us
Israeli President Isaac Herzog said he was "appalled" by the shooting.
"It is a despicable act of hatred and anti-Semitism," he wrote on X.
He added that he expressed his "full support" to the embassy staff and the Jewish community in the US.
"America and Israel will be united in protecting our people and our shared values. Terror and hatred will not break us," he writes.
Djurić: Our thoughts are with the families of the deceased
The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Marko Djurić, today sent his condolences to the State of Israel and to the head of diplomacy of that country, Gideon Saar, on the occasion of the death of the employees of the Israeli Embassy who were killed in a shooting in Washington.
"We strongly condemn the heinous murder of two Israeli diplomats near the Jewish Museum in Washington. This act of violence is unacceptable and requires a thorough investigation and justice," Djurić said on the X network.
Our thoughts are with the victims' families and the Israeli people, Djurić added.
