Ceasefire proposal rejected
Palestinian militant group Hamas has rejected an Israeli proposal for a six-week ceasefire in the Gaza Strip during which the group would surrender its weapons, an unnamed senior Palestinian official said.
The official said the Israeli proposal, which was delivered to Hamas through Egyptian intermediaries, did not commit Israel to end the war in the Gaza Strip or to withdraw Israeli troops, key demands of Hamas in exchange for the release of the remaining hostages, the BBC reported.
Since March 18, Israel has continued its military offensive in the Gaza Strip after an almost two-month ceasefire that came into effect on January 19, during which Hamas released 33 hostages.
Hamas is believed to be holding the remaining 59 hostages, 24 of whom are alive.
