Hell in Serbia: Temperatures reach 40 degrees

At 5 p.m., the hottest place in Serbia was Ćuprija, where temperatures reached 40°C, while the coolest was Kopaonik, where 24°C was recorded, according to data published by the State Hydrometeorological Institute of Serbia (RHMZ).

In Banatski Karlovac, Loznica, Valjevo, Smederevska Palanka, Kruševac and Niš, 39°C was recorded, while 38°C was measured in Belgrade, Sombor, Novi Sad, Zrenjanin, Kikinda, Sremska Mitrovica, Kragujevac, Veliko Gradište, Kraljevo and Leskovac. 

Temperatures were 38°C in Negotin, Zaječar and Dimitrovgrad, while Vranje, Kuršumlija and Palić recorded 36°C.

According to the Republic Hydrometeorological Service of Serbia (RHMZ), conditions are expected to remain predominantly clear and extremely hot, with weak to moderate southerly and southwesterly winds, occasionally strong in northern and mountainous areas.

A red weather alert is in effect for Belgrade, Srem, Bačka, Banat, western Serbia, Šumadija, Pomoravlje and southeastern Serbia, while an orange alert applies elsewhere. 

The heatwave is expected to continue through August 24, with temperatures locally reaching around 42°C in central and southern Serbia. 

The State Hydrometeorological Institute of Serbia (RHMZ) has issued a warning for a strong heatwave expected across Serbia from August 20 to 24, with maximum temperatures ranging from 34°C to 40°C.

Temperatures could locally reach around 42°C in central and southern Serbia by Saturday, August 22. RHMZ also warns of extremely high fire risk due to the heat, dry conditions and increased winds.
