Dramatic battle against Deliblato Sands wildfire: Farms with livestock under threat PHOTO

Agriculture, Forestry and Water Management Minister Prof. Dr. Dragan Glamočić and Head of the Emergency Management Sector Luka Čaušić visited the area today.

Glamočić warned that an extremely difficult period lies ahead for the teams on the ground, as strong winds could quickly change the direction in which the fire spreads.

“The most important thing is to protect human lives, property and as much of this extremely valuable natural area as possible. The people here know what they are doing and have been giving all they could for days. We came to give them our full support and help in any way necessary,” Glamočić said. 

The scale of the danger, he said, is best illustrated by the fact that more than 200 fires are reported across Serbia every day, while conditions on the ground can change within just a few moments.

The minister also spoke with local farmers whose properties are under threat. One of the farms has around 100 head of livestock, but thanks to the major efforts of firefighters, other emergency services and local residents, the fire has not reached the buildings in recent days.
