Terrifying words of a climatologist: The weather will go wild in Serbia; The data is striking

Climate experts from Serbia explain that due to climate change and the warming of the planet, both in the world and in our country, we can expect the frequency of extreme weather events in the future.

Ana Vuković Vimić, climatologist and full professor of the Faculty of Agriculture, told Blic TV that Serbia is currently in a trend of increasing the frequency of devastating storms and that three parts of the country are particularly affected by extreme weather events.

"Serbia, especially the central and western region, was previously affected by strong storms or hail about once a year during the 20th century. However, now we are in a trend of increasing the frequency of those storms. Now it is possible for someone to experience a strong hail four to five times a year in the same place. A few decades ago, that was unimaginable," said Vimić.

Vojvodina the most vulnerable region

She explained that Vojvodina is a particularly vulnerable region, characterized by a flat, very heated surface that feeds on storm energy.

"This kind of topography is similar to areas in America where tornadoes occur. We saw extreme events last year as well, with storms that spread to the east of Serbia. The prevalence of these disasters is increasing," said the professor.

No area will be safe

The number of regions with a high risk of extreme precipitation or storms is expected to increase significantly.

"By the middle of the 21st century, over 52 percent of Serbia's territory will be at high risk, which means that it will be affected by such disasters almost every year. There is no area that will remain safe," the professor warned.

"Supercell storms are mini hurricanes"

More and more frequent weather extremes are nothing new, they have been following us for many years, and this year also saw more unprecedented storm scenes.

As professor Dr. Aleksandar Valjarević from the Faculty of Geography said for Blic, supercell storms will appear even more in Serbia in the future.

"A supercell storm is a miniature hurricane and on the scale for hurricanes, which is called the Safir-Simpson scale, a 'two' appeared here in May, and it is even possible that a 'three' was recorded. It is a storm wind of up to 180 km/h. But, in addition, according to the research of my colleagues from the PMF in Novi Sad, in which they studied the frequency of hail, they came to the startling conclusion that regardless of the fact that the anti-hail missile system exists since 1953, the number of days with hail increased. This means that rockets are not a modern means of reducing the number of days with hail. They appear more often in the same place later. Rockets are good and should be used, but due to the increase in the number of days with hail, other methods should be considered", Dr. Valjarević said.

The intensity of precipitation has changed

When asked what is the cause of the weather problems that have befallen us, he says that he believes that it is only to some extent climate change.

Previously, he believed that it was the influence of man through the effect of gases and the greenhouse, but when he came to a huge number of data and conclusions, he saw that the Sun should never be neglected because it is our closest star, it gives us the greatest energy flux and absolutely affects the air masses, above all in the troposphere.

"The amount of precipitation has remained the same, but the intensity and strength of the precipitation has changed. This is how I see the climate in the future. It will be much more dynamic than it was about 60 years ago. In one day, you will have spring, autumn and summer. In winter, you will have summer at once, and cooling at once. In the future, everything will be more dynamic, and especially May, July and August will be unstable," says Prof. Dr. Valjarević.
