By 2030, this country will become the fourth strongest military power in the world.
South Korean President Lee Jae-myung stated that by 2030 the country will allocate a “larger-than-expected budget” for defense in order to build a military industry that will rank fourth in the world in size.
Lee made the statement at South Korea’s largest-ever arms exhibition.
According to data from the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute, South Korea is currently the tenth-largest arms exporter in the world.
“Becoming one of the top four defense industries is not an impossible dream,” Lee said.
“We will establish technological sovereignty by focusing investments on the development of technologies, components, and materials for the defense sector,” he added.
South Korea promises that it will share not only weapons systems but also “technology and industry-building experience” with its overseas partners, Lee said.
Arms exports have become one of South Korea’s fastest-growing export sectors, especially following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
