Some people here question the benefit of transit fees for the Bulgarians. There certainly would have been fees but they would not transform this poor EU country into a rich county. More important than transit fees would have been the energy security that South Stream would have brought Bulgaria. They would have had a direct connection with Russia - no middlemen to cut off the supply. Now they are going to have to finance a link to the new Turk Stream. If the link is with Turkey, then there is one middleman; if it is with Greece, then there aree two middlemen; a link via Macedonia would mean three middlemen; and a link via Serbia would be four middlemen.

The stupidity of the Bulgarians is obvious to all.

Poor Bulgaria is cut out since it was bullied by the U.S., through Senator John McCain. Bulgaria would have made a huge amount of money in the transit fees of South Stream, but they were severely threatened by the EU and U.S.

One could only assume that IF what you say is true about the huge amount of money in transit fees, then with most of Russian Oil supplied to Europe currently transits through Ukraine, that there would not be an issue with Ukraine being able to pay for their own oil usage.
Think about it, if the pipeline passes through 10 countries and each charges huge transit fees the oil would become too expensive for others to buy.

More than that the Turkish hub in Lüleburgaz will replace the Bulgarian Burgas. Every Bulgarian and every Turk will tell you that Lüleburgaz is composed of two words “Lüle” and “burgaz”. The joke is that Bulgarian БУРГАС and Turkish BURGAZ in fact is the same word. And I don’t think that Lüleburgaz was chosen by accident.

In Bulgarian elites have always been two mainstreams – pro-Russian and pro-German. Most often pro-German elites took the upper hand and it always ended very bad. Russians and the Bulgarians only once fought side by side. It was way back in the 19 century when we were setting them free. In all other wars they one way or another backed our rivals. So was during the Balkan Wars that ended with WW1 and so was during WW2 when their troops controlled some Balkan states letting the Germans send more of their much better troops to the USSR.

So is today when Bulgaria is as active in NATO as Russophobe Poland and Romania. And when Gazprom stops the Ukrainian transit in 2018 they will suck from their historical rival Turkey.
