I just returned to Belgrade from a visit to Banja Luka, for a news interview there on Radio Television Republika Srpska. I was shocked to discover that there was not a single cyrillic character on any building or sign in any store or office except where forced by law, such as on the small public street signs and on state facilities such as the post office and bus station. If the Serbian people wish to maintain their own cultural identity, especially in RS where they have been the subject of genocide by the Croatian clerico-fascist regime of WWII, and the subject of two-sided war from Muslim and Croat attackers in the 1990s, then it is ESSENTIAL that the cyrillic script be used and promoted in every possible way. This will require the adoption of a Quebec-style language law that will guarantee the Serbian language, cyrillic characters and other cultural traditions are maintained. The French are thriving culturally in Quebec today, largely because of making a solid cultural defense. Republika Srpska should adopt identical laws to those used today in Canada's province of Quebec... before it is too late!

There's no reason why Cyrillic anywhere in Croatia should be perceived as such a problem when most of the signs in Serbia are in the Latin script and no one's complaining there. "

The signs in Serbia are all in cyrillic and latin to respect minorities and thats why it should be the same in Croatia.

Regardless of what the Serbs think, Croatia is a E.U and NATO member. It also holds the keys for Serbia's entry to Europe. No wonder the Croats are against Cirilica in VUKOVAR when you have fascists like Seselj wanting to arm up and start another war. Grow up you imbeciles the world is laughing at the Balkans.

Oh, I forgot, were not suppose to talk about that, you know what I mean, the Serbian Holocast! What happened to millions of innocent civilian Serbs in Srpska Krajina during World War Two? Did they just vanish into thin air? Just like the six million Jewish people of greater Europe, they just vanished? No body murdered, no one, it is all a big lie isn't it? Hitler and Ante Pavelich good men so close to God? We Serbians are the bad ones, we discriminate against all other races and religions, that's why we permitted Josif Broz a Croatian to rule Jugoslavia from the heart of Serbia for over 35 years! Yes, after the horrific extermination of well over one million innocent Serbian people in Srpska Krajina during World War Two at the hands of Croatian Ustase and blessed by the Vatican, Serbia put Josif Broz Tito on the throne in Beograd! So that in itself shows the world how discriminent a people we Serbians really are! What if it was the other way around, do you think the Croatians would put a Serbian on their trone in the heart of Zagreb? Here I go again, talking in my imagination, nothing happened to innocent Serbian civilians in Srpska Krajina and also nothing happend to them in Kosovo during the last sixteen plus years? Every thing is OK, it's all just in my stupid Serbian head, right? Not to popular to talk about that is it, we don't want to offend Papa in the Vatican do we? I have to keep reminding myself it's all only in my head, just some thing that never happened?

UN what a joke you are saying! What rights does any Slavic Eastern Orthodox Christian have in the Roman Catholic Empire? I ask any Serbian Brother or Sister who doubts me to put on a shirt or jacket with the word Serbian on it and walk around in the USA, England, Germany or any other Roman Catholic Empire country and see how far you get before you are attacked or mocked! When I told my teachers and coworkers that I would be staying home on January 7 to celibrate Christmas the typical response was always the same "Oh, you celebrate Russian Communist Chrirtmas"! So you think the few Serbians who are still alive in Kosovo and Croatia will celebrate Eastern Orthodox Holy days according to our ancient traditions and speak, read and write our native language? Through out my life I have kept a humble heart to forgive the horrific suffering and sacrifice my parents and family tolerated during World War Two in Srpska Krajina and Srbija. Well over one million and maybe as high as two million innocent Serbian people were horrifically murdered by Croations with the blessing of Hitler and the Holy Roman Catholic Empire! For the Croations the only good Serbian is a dead one! So my Serbian Brothers and Sisters who permit Tony Blair in the heart of Serbia for a tea party remember the Blood and Tears of all us unfortunate souls who lost every thing including our lives in Srpska Krajina, Kosovo and all the other sacred ancient Serbian territories of Bosnia and Herzegovina!

Bravo--Ian, UK! B92 would have you believe signs in Cyrillic means something, while B92 their entire site in Latin. More Serbs used the Latin alphabet rather than Cyrillic and why, it is easier in communication. Who here seriously thinks Serbs in Croatian do not know the Latin alphabet? come on people… do not let hatred pull you by the nose. Folks free yourself from thieves who use nationalism to justify their inability to do something good for the people. Free yourself of people who need someone else's misery, to enrich themselves. True individual freedom cannot exist without economic security and independence. People who are hungry and out of a job are the stuff of which dictatorships are made. Serbia as Croatia have a policy of "the worse for the people the better for politicians"

Ian,I hardly think the Cyrillic issue is of any great importance to the Serbian population (what little has been allowed to remain in Croatia), either. What concerns them more is the discrimination that they have been suffering from in that part of the world for over a century now and face every day even now. There's no reason why Cyrillic anywhere in Croatia should be perceived as such a problem when most of the signs in Serbia are in the Latin script and no one's complaining there. After all despite what anyone thinks they all speak the same language and you can call it what you like and write it how you like it's still the same.Inventing new words is not going to change that. So if your perception of the issue is correct we don't have a problem and the media need no longer give it any attention.

That's not surprising considering the signs in Cyrillic tend to be in Serb-populated areas. Of course that's inconsequential to the die-hard nationalists of any country who take this as the opening salvo meant to destroy an imagined way of life that never existed in the first place. Still, the fact that these signs are targets of nationalist attack, however small and irrelevant they may be, is cause for concern.

I was in Vukovar over the summer and I saw plenty of signs in Cyrillic. No one was bothered about it, no one was rioting and it didn't offend anyone unlike what B92 would have you believe. However on my way from Vukovar to Osijek, we travelled through a Serb neighbourhood and they appeared to be isolated/ segregated from the Croat neighbourhoods so this is a cause for concern.

This is all old news. The unfortunate truth is that the UN and EU have no teeth in their rhetoric.

The Croatian gov't. lied by promising to enforce human rights and civil liberties to all of its citizens including Serbs as a prerequisite to entering the EU. As soon as they were admitted to Europe's dubious club, all of their promises were conveniently forgotten.

Now, every so often the EU or UN sends a letter to the Croat gov't. reminding them of their obligations only to be dismissed by the recipients. This is just more evidence for the world to see that Croatia is far from a democratic civil society.

Is there any wonder why the Croat economy is in a shambles and foreign investment is virtually non-existent? At least Croatia is no longer the problem of Yugoslavia but rather the EU now.
