Same old story - people discontent with their lives protest about something irrelevant rather than the real issues causing them misery:
Lack of jobs, poverty, migration of people from Vukovar to Osijek and Zagreb, lack of investment in Vukovar by central government and business, lack of money in local schools and no prospects.

The real people betraying the citizens of Vukovar are the Croatian authorities which have failed them over and over since the conflict ended.

Much as its uncomfortable for the Croatian government to have these protests because the EU is watching, for them it is preferable than those same angry, embittered men causing a riot in Zagreb...

Can you imagine how many different language signs could be used in the USA or Vojvodina.

I know! It would be a regular City of Babel! It would be so cumbersome to accommodate everyone! It would be, oh wait....

The lies of the anti-Serbs ends here. The army attacking Vukovar was far more multiethnic than the army defending it. Probably because the defends of Vukovar were busy exterminating Serbs left and right when not utilising them for forced blood transfusions, as evident here: http://www.juliagorin.com/wordpress/?p=1527 (NSFW. Do not read if squeamish.) Apart from that when the attacking army finally took over Vukovar they found the defenders trying to pass themselves off as civilians and even hospital patients. Plus if the anti-Serb propaganda is to be believed then there wouldn't be any Vukovar veterans to protest because the attacking army supposedly massacred all the defenders. (And not just the suspected war criminals who were responsible for the atrocities shown above.) I could go on and on but my main point is that a lot of the national psyche in Croatia is based on the Vukovar myth. It would be mentally and spiritually healthy for those who're loyal to Croatia to recognise these lies for what they are.

Same thing happens with less fanfare in Belgrade - far rightists roam the city and spray-paint latinic script on official signs and street signs.

Peter w when are people like you going to stop spewing this old garbage? The sooner people like you realise who REALLY started the war then maybe ,just maybe, this sort of incident will become history. As I lie here next to my lady who no longer lives where she was born because of those bigots in the news photo it's obvious to me who was to blame for the war since they were the ones that came knocking on her door and gave her and her family 24 hours to leave their home. That was 1991 in Zadar and guess what it was because they were Serbian. The pre-war population of that town was 40% Serb it's now less than 5% no need for sign wreckers there hey? The ancestors of those bigots drove my Serbian family out of Bosnia in 1941. They weren't so lucky most of them were murdered by the Ustashi thugs whose main targets are women and children. So cut the crap you idiot and wash your mouth out !!! Only comment when you know something don't manufacture history. We were there we KNOW who started the war!!!!!!

Yet another example of the tolerant and harmonious democratic state of freedom loving Croatia, where ALL citizens are respected and treated equally.
...as long as you are not an ethnic minority

Lets not forget that what the Serbs stated after the fall of Vukovar in 1991 " Slobo give me salad we will cut the throats of Croats ". I could go on on about why there should not be 'cirilica' in Vukovar but what's the point when your talking to a bunch of un-educated maggots with no clue. Vukovar is still 50 years away from formal reintegration between Croats & Serbs. For heavens sake leave it be !

I'm in support of the protestors and yes I do understand them. Serbia were the aggressors in the war and why should the Serb minority be upset if their alphabet is not used in Croatia....regardless if that is the law it can be overturned and changed...it's ridiculous. Can you imagine how many different language signs could be used in the USA or Vojvodina.

Judging by the photo, the guy above the officer with the beret and Croatian coat of arms/symbol, was whacking the plaque above him without a blink. A blind eye was turned by the local authorities - shame on the EU - and those that support a regime that doesn't respect their minorities rights.

"Later on Monday, the Croatian police announced that several persons were arrested on suspicion that they committed criminal acts during the protest."

Good work. Police should arrest these idiots, let them pay for the cost of the police operation and for the damage, put them into prison for some days because of disturbing public order, and later set up new plaques again. Maybe that's how those extremist learn it?

LOL I really hope these "war veterans" were given the hot meal and shower they were promised if they came out and demonstrated before returning to the streets to beg and be ignored by their elected leaders in the dilapidated apartments they can barely afford on their pensions. Croatian politicians can always rely on these people for whipping up national hysteria and keep them poor and disenfranchised enough to remain dependent on whatever handouts are occasionally thrown at them.
