I know why the Fatwa was issued!!It has come to light that the last Deda Mraz to appear in Sarajevo was in fact Salman Rushdie in disguise.

To be honest with you, I am a Bosnian Catholic and I would walk around the streets in a Santa costume, because Bosnia is NOT a "Muslim" country. For centuries, it has not been. These "people" don't speak the minds of the people of Bosnia, they are trying to use persuasion of children as a tool in this endless war. I have to say, it isn't working and it gives me shame to be classified as a Bosnian with these people. The only Bosnia is a united Bosnia.

Ok, so practicing Muslims ask their religious leadership for their opinion on Santa and they get the expected answer because I guess nobody can say Santa is part of Islamic tradition. However, the Islamic community guy who is issuing this opinion also says something along the lines "this explanation is from the Islamic point of view, but everyone can make their own choice." And people do make it...wherever you go in Sarajevo you'll see a Santa or two, kids are getting presents from Santa all over the town, in kindergartens, companies, schools....but whoever wrote this text claims that Santa was "banished" from Sarajevo because Islamic community said it was not part of Islamic tradition. Where does this conclusion come from?

"this is not another war of religion (so called) but an attempt to continue the apartheid and political power plays from the war (milosevic/karadzic/mladic project)which stinks, big time, in whichever quarter it manifests. so much for yr beloved daytonization." (roberto)

-- Don't forget Izetbegovic and Silajdzic. This is taking part in that part of your beloved Bosnia, not the evil evil RS. How you managed to get Milosevic et al into this story is clearly your own logic. But as far as "daytonization" is concerned, thank the gods. This nonsense from these clerics is contained to Federacija only.

With this fatwa.... I wonder will all of the wahabbis in Sarajevo with white beards have to shave? The Bosniaks would not want their children confusing an over weight wahabi with Santa.

In my opinion and some other people's opinions as well the image of Santa Clause should not disappear from Bosnia all because there are Christians residing in that country. If necessary to state, although I'm not Christian I have accepted Christmas presents from some folks over the years, also, for this year, there were these charitable organizers in a local shopping center accepting unwrapped toys as Christmas presents for local impoverished kids so therefore I donated some toys to this organization to be Christmas presents distributed to some needy kids. My point is that I feel tolerant with regards to people celebrating Christmas.

"The Czechs may be the most US-like Europeans, but even they began asking a few years ago why they needed Santa - they have their own traditions." (Amer)

-- I'm particularly fond of the tradition where St. Nicholas leaves the reindeer behind when travelling through Austria and Lower Germany and goes around with 6 - 8 Krampusse. Nothing says "be good" than sheer terror expected from these guys.

What utter idiocy from the religious extremist "guardians" in my beloved sarajevo. thinking they own all of the hearts and minds of the people, which they don't!

santa claus is not the enemy -- we all grew up w/ him here, and it didn't destroy us. i even used to be the santa claus (a lot of padding!) when i was preschool teacher in detroit.

we jews are not anti-santa.

really, let children be children, not pawns in our stupid, endless wars...

The sight of Santa Claus in European towns always made me a little uneasy - it's almost like waving the US flag. For Christmas. The Czechs may be the most US-like Europeans, but even they began asking a few years ago why they needed Santa - they have their own traditions. (Their gift-giver is accompanied by a little black imp, for example.) One of the cartoonists at Gazeta shows a Santa with a blue suit with gold trim (and 6 stars) to symbolize the end-of-year holidays - if you're going to borrow a symbol, take the trouble to domesticate it.

There is still a Santa Claus in Republika Srpska! Pity that the earlier Serb and Croat generations from centuries ago didn't impose a similar law not recognizing 'Bosniaks'. They too did not exist in that region... once upon a time.

"Pity the Croat children in the Federation."

But the Croats made their beds with the Muslims. Furthermore, Croatia seems to support the Bosnian Muslim government over the Bosnian Croats, as partly they are pressured by the west and the other part is that they know it would benefit Serbs if they worked against a Muslim Bosnia. So to keep the Serbs under pressure and weaker, they support the Bosnian Muslims - even if it harms the Bosnian Croats.

Of course they have more important things to worry about, but why address real issues when you can win some points with fanatics. This is ludicrous as I fondly remember Santa from my childhood in Bosnia. The people need to start standing up to these extremists. I guarantee that a majority of Bosniaks do not support these actions.

I wonder if any single figure has done more damage to modern Christianity than Santa Claus. Santa Claus, in the west at least, reflects the secularization of Christmas.

I as a Croat am appalled by these muslim fanatics that want a complete Islamic state. The Croats have to take Dodik's lead and start segregating from these religious nobody's who 20 years ago were eating pork and saluting Tito as their god and now think they are true muslims. Get rid of them, this fake country called BiH is an absolute joke..

With Catholic clerics writing about Homer Simpson as B92 reported and now Muslim clerics issuing soft-core veiled fatwas against Santa Claus - I'M PROUD 2 BE ORTHODOX the last and only serious religion to survive modernity and stay socially relevant
