I agree with Kate – there should be sensitivity. Building up tolerance is really about a process of education. Once people see that those attending Pride aren’t freaks or weirdos, the process of reassurance will begin. People will see Pride as a place for perfectly ordinary citizens – office workers, nurses, factory workers, students, young and old. But the people of Belgrade must see this event so the route should be through the busy middle of the city, and not in a field in New Belgrade.

I live in London and our Pride is now very different from the early days, 30 years ago, when it was a more modest and sensitive affair – much like Belgrade’s will be. Our Pride needs almost no police, and the whole community enjoys it. Local businesses make a lot of money from such a large celebration –so the business community supports pride. Please Roberto, allow Serbia and it’s citizens to grow and learn at a pace that suits everyone. This won’t happen by pushing things too fast – it could easily cause a backlash which may harm the very people you and I support – gay people of Serbia. And I wish all the progressive and liberally minded people of Serbia to go along and support this important event.

Peace and respect!

Roberto - as you know I am not homophobic, and as far as I am concerned, the more love in the world the better. Regardless of gender (living with another woman would probably be far tidier! Joke!!).

I am also in favour of marching for rights, but it is a plain fact that some sensitivity has to be used so as not to alienate people. Just as not so long ago, in certain areas of England gay people would be beaten up just for being gay. Things have to catch up in many countries in the world so that people see that homosexuality is not a threat.

However, I would find your comments far more sincere if I ever heard a single word from you about any crimes carried out against Serbian people.

All war crimes are sickening, regardless of the 'ethnicity' of victim or perpetrator, and yet I have never read anything from you wish is vaguely empathetic of any Serbian people.

And before you say it, I always make that point when it comes to crimes. People are people, and all valuable beings (except for a few violent murdering raping individuals who poison all societies).

You cannot be xenophobic and then accuse others of being homophobic. Liberal is liberal - by its very nature it should be a broad brush.

--He also called on the citizens not to use any type of violence towards the participants in this event.

Dačić said that, in accordance with the Constitution and the law, the police's obligation is to ensure the security of the participants in public gatherings, whatever they may think of them.

He told the journalists at the parliament that, ahead of this year's Pride Parade scheduled for October 10, the cooperation of the police and other state bodies with the event organizers is much better than last year.

Dačić said that no meeting regarding Serbia's EU integration went by without questions as to why last year's Pride Parade was canceled. --

"whatever they may think of them..." no matter what we think of the blgd regime and their very loyal milosevici.

yes, let's be honest -- w/out the pressure fr the civilized west, the lgbt communities (and frnds) of the balkans are in deep sh-t. prevalent local attitudes are about 100 years behind the times, read the comments below. there is no tolerance, no interest in diversity, no interest in reaching out to minorities, no interest in being inclusive... by "no" i mean very limited.

if one is part of any minority community, but esp.ly the lgbt one, life is very, very rough. i don't live over there, no one is asking for "sympathy" -- i'm just stating the way it is.

there will be trouble at the parade, of that i am sure -- but IF there is the political will, then attackers will be dealt with, and the marchers will be safe. otherwise, it will be very very ugly, again.

i am deeply grateful for (modern) euro democratic values, but democracy must grow, must have leadership from above but energized from below. it is a lie that freedom, democracy, diversity, human rights are western inventions or "perversions." these ideas have deep roots all over the world, even and esp.ly in the balkans. but a lethal combination of commie-nism (sorry) and extreme nationalism/ religious fundamentalism has made such concepts SEEM foreign to many. we have some of the greatest human rights intellectuals based in belgrade, in serbia -- yet they are viewed as western imperialist agents. how sad, how very tragic.

nevertheless i believe that we will persevere, and gradually bring even serbia into the 21st century.

if you don't wanna have anything to do w the lgbt event, if yr freaked out, stay home, lock the doors, unplug the electronics, turn the lights down...

"The REAL extremists are those who challenge & force the change of MILLENIA-old cohesive traditions of Serb Orthodox culture."

Serbs didn't convert to Christianity until about 600AD, so "Serbian Orthodox" culture has not been around for millenia.

The sad thing about the gay parade is that actually nobody cares for the gays at all. Some international political forces are pushing worldwide the 'gay issue' which is just a part of a conspiracy. The global aim is to demoralize the people and promote chaos. Promoting gays is just one thing among lot's of other things. We could name the rubbish TV shows that overflows the quality programs, introducing new kind of music streams which are all somehow associated with drugs (promoted by media), attacking the muslim and catholic religions who are trying to teach some morals to the believers. The whole thing might be unbelievable but sadly true. The aim is that our planet becomes overpopulated and it is time to get rid of a certain number of a population. As an addition to the things mentioned, the new generation of genetically modified food will flood the markets soon. This will lead to unknown diseases and probably a bigger percent of population getting cancer.

If somebody wants to introduce a gay parade, then let's make a referendum about it. That is a democratic way of dealing with it. If the nation wants to see a gay parade then it will vote positively, if they don't want to see a gay parade then they will vote against it. Or somebody from the international political circles are ignoring the democracy??
