“Europe will not counterbalance the United States because, in the end”. The Gaullist idea of counterbalancing America is cutting the branch you are sitting on. Europe has proven incapable to defend itself. It relies for defense on the US. The common identity as far as it exists could not be European as opposed to American. After all the Poles and the Irish have more fellow Poles and fellow Irishmen in the USA than in most other EU countries. America is a natural enlargement of Europe, it has after all saved Europe from Hitler or Stalin. So if a super-national identity is to be sought it has to be Western, not “European”. It must include the US, not trying to counterbalance it. President Obama ended the Bush’s policy of uniletarism. May be the US too would one day be willing to share some of its sovereignty with its principle allies. But as far as Greece is concerned, there is a good question: Is Greece a Western country? Huntington believes it is not.
