"I have been surprised at the nature of the political debate in the Parliament. In some statements the EU has been perceived rather as an adversary than as a partner,"

Wow, Rehn must be living in Never-Never Land with Peter Pan if he was surprised that the EU might possibly be perceived as an adversary. Maybe he ought to be asking himself why so many in Serbia feel that way? The EU is in the process of attempting to carve up Serbia and he expects the Serbian people to welcome the EU with open arms so they can buy up and dominate the Serbian economy? After a decade of reform Serbia is still highly demonized in the West, eventually the Serbian people will grow tired of it and shift their focus on expanding trade and international relations with other economic powerhouses in the world like Russia, China and the Middle East.

Seriously, what is the benefit of being strictly pro-Western? Serbia will do much better in the future by taking the middle road between East and West. Having some "radicals" involved in Government is not only very healthy for true democracy in Serbia, but for its International relations as well.

While I do not support the policies of Nikolic, I think including him in the government is very positive for Serbia. All views in Serbia must have a voice if democracy there is to have any sort of validity. Western Capitalist Governments only seem to support "democracy" in countries when pro-western politicians are elected. When someone is elected that they do not agree with, such as Hamas, they do everything in their power to over turn the will of the people. Already the West is threatening reprisals for including the radicals in the government. Hypocrisy at its best.

Serbia is not at crossroads... Since last elections they choosed way of ultranationalism. Otherwise, how to interpret the fact that majority in Serbian parliament is made from ultranationalist parties... Some nationalist parties are only hiding behind 'democratic' names... Serbia politic scene is far away from real democtaric orientations and commitments...

I read today that the US has implicated both Russia and China today for arming various warring factions in Africa. Is this not pot-kettle-black? Didn't the US arm and train al-qaeda?

It makes me sick when these Western nations always think they are on the right side, and the world should follow them.

To me West = Exploitation. I know, I live in the West.

...how often have they said this before? Serbia is at crossroads, here and there, bla and bla...

their repertoire is really surprisingly small.

and hey, boys, ...all you who see a radical being elected as a head of parliament... cool down, that´s not a sign for a nationalist future, ...you just don´t get it, that´s a sign for DEMOCRACY... something most of you don´t even understand, as it seems...

so, calm down, and don´t write of the end of the world...when it is only about the speaker in the parliament... okay?

I think Serbia is going to face more serious problems in the near future. After Kosovo, will surely come Sandzak and Vojvodina will follow suit...seems that the guys who are cooking world politics are convinced that making Greater Serbia in the 19-th and 20-th century was a mistake. Serbia needs dismemberment to function as a democratic, non-oppressive real small Serbia. That would be good for Serbs too.

Serbia is looking at a future with its Ally Russia. The West sided with Islam in the balkans because Serbs are loyal to Russians. Russia is now regaining their power and Serbia is following their lead. Our future is with them, not the Americans. Europe ultimately relies on Russia for survival, so why join the West right now, the future belongs to the East.

Crossroad of which Solana speaks, return to nationalistic past of move toward European future, has more ways then just these two.
Two mentioned are both wrong.
Serbia should choose neither, but rather, to start building it's future in close co-opearation with Russia.

This is the same Javier Solana who was once an anti-war peace activist back in his youth, then became the chief of NATO cheering on the around the clock bombing of Serbia for 78 days, who is now pretending to be our friend again. These kind of characters we don't need as our friends, since it is obvious that they can change allegiance on a whim. He is an opportunist who is lacking in morals to say the least. Whatever he says or does, consider the source.

The situation in Serbia is good, and would be better if the EU would only mind their own business. The people have spoken by means of the voting ballet boxes, and all Democracies including the EU must respect the will of the people. In any Democracy you can never make everyone happy no matter how hard you try, and usually most things get to be a compromise anyway.

It is not only the President that pledged to cooperate with The Hague, but each and every Member of Parliament has at least the same and possibly even more commitment to fulfil all their International Obligations. These International Obligations include respect for the Helsinki Final Act 1975, International Law, and the UN Charter.

The Government and not the President should be in charge of the security sector and the other ministries because the President is just a Figurehead who has no real authority or responsibility under the Serbian Constitution. Whoever is elected as Speaker of the Parliament is a matter for the Parliament, and for no one else.

Any Serbian Government will be positive and constructive, as all Democratically Elected Honourable Member of Parliament seek friendly relations with all Governments and Peoples. The people of Serbia are not concerned if there is going to be a fresh election, because this is what may be needed on the rare occasions, and the Constitution has wisely made such a provision. If there is a fresh election, then I believe that this should only strengthen the already strong relations that Serbia enjoys with the EU, as this will prove beyond all doubt Serbia’s strong longstanding commitment to Democracy. There may even be a negotiated Coalition Government, and I am sure that the Democratically Elected Honourable Members of Parliament will use the few days left for further negotiations. We have until the 14th of May to know one way or the other, and we will all wait patiently until then.
