The examination of the Milosevic years and legacy will likely take a long time and can only take place in the context of the truth.

In the article, Mr. Montgomery says that most Serbs hold different beliefs than many in the international community. He fails to explore the role of the western media in Balkan perceptions. For example, when Serbia was pronounced "not guilty" of genocide by the ICC the majority of articles in the western press called the ruling "political" or questioned the "availability of all relevant documents". The general impression was that the Serbs were really guilty as an entire nation and for the most part the ruling and the court really was not respected in the hearts and minds of the western public.

Also, recent research has estimated the Bosnian war dead at 100,000 military and civilians spread across 3 ethnic groups, yet figures of 200,000/250,000 are widely used and with them the implication is often usually that the casualties were all Muslim Bosniak civilians killed in cold-blooded massacres. Kosovo Albanian deaths were also notoriously inflated in the media at 100,000 during the beginning of the 1998-99 conflict and then plummeted to 10,000 afterwards- of which about 4,000 bodies of all ethnicities have been recovered. Serb casualties in the war also were described as "collateral damage".

Deaths caused by Serbs to other Balkan nations in the 1990's were certainly tragic. It is certainly very likely that a higher number of Bosniaks, Kosovo Albanians, and Croats died at the hands of Serb military and paramilitaries during these events. However, western reporters and politicians must first look at its own exaggerations before it asks many Serbs to explore their minimizations. The west also needs to treat Serbs in Bosnia and Kosovo with equality, and refrain from only backing concepts of centralized political control from Sarajevo and Prishtina which played big factors in both conflicts taking place in the first place. If the west prepared to do these things then I am sure the Serbs would follow suit.

I think it has to be mentioned that the effort to take away Kosovo from Serbia is keeping Serbs in a position where they are victims and is legitimizing a lot of what Milosevic said.

How long are Serbs supposed to be punished for Milosevic? Why do countries like the UK and the US want to strip Serbia of it's land and it's heritage. I do not understand why so many people refuse even for one second to see the positions of Serbs as legitimate in any way shape or form.

You can not keep hounding a country and it's people and expect them to be glad for it.

Djindjic is getting a lot of praise in this article but he did not rush to give Kosovo away. His highest priority was not to abandon the Serbs in Kosovo. No Serbian leader ever will give Kosovo away.

If the price of Serbian integration into Europe is giving away it's territories. Handing over so called war criminals who in a lot of cases protected Serbs from terrorists, and a complete break from it's history, religion, culture then It is quite clear the Serbia will never be in the EU or be part of Europe ever. The EU must not be so biased against Serbs and Serbia and start treating them as equals not evil.
